Death Toll In Boko Haram’s Attack In Borno Hits 60…As 90 Others Were Confirmed Wounded

The death toll in Sunday’s night attack in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital by suspected Boko Haram bombers has risen to 60, with about 90 others confirmed to have been wounded in the lethal attack. A suicide bomber reportedly detonated explosive devices inside a mosque midway into Muslim night prayers at Ajilari Cross in the metropolis at about 7.20pm local time.

Witnesses said another bomber also threw explosive devices at an area which cell phones accessories are sold while the third blast occurred in a local market near the area, all at Gomari area.

Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman confirmed the blasts in a press statement on Sunday night but did not give any detail. Residents said the casualty figures of those killed by the blast may be as high as 60, adding that some families and relations of the deceased had evacuated corpses of their victims during rescue exercises.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Victor Isuku confirmed 54 people died while 90 were injured. He said those injured have been taken to various hospitals in the capital for treatment.

As at mid-day today, many residents were seen at the Specialists Hospital mortuary to collect the corpses of their deceased relations while others also came to attend to those injured. On his part, Gov Kashim Shettima held a crucial meeting with some heads of security agencies in the state ahead of the Eid el Kabir Muslim festival on Thursday.
